About our show / casting guidelines

NSPA is excited to take another awesome group to the Junior Theater Festival! At this event, students will perform a 15-minute cutting of a Broadway Jr show in Atlanta, GA for a panel of highly ranked judges! Please visit the JTF tab of our website for more detailed information!
  • We are looking for participants from 5th - 12th grade. Please discuss any  exception requests with our Artistic Director.
  • Participants have to have been involved in NSPA programming before to be considered for our JTF troupe.
  • We will select between 15-20 students to travel to JTF and perform a 15-minute cutting of Matilda JR  at the festival.

About our audition process

*There will be no online auditions available for this production. If you need to set up an alternate vocal audition date please let our Artistic Director know via email by May 25th.*

Pre-Audition
After reserving your audition slot, make sure you have completed an audition form! You will not be allowed into the audition room if a form has not been completed. Auditionees that make it to day 3 will be asked to prepare a one minute dramatic monologue. Memorization is preferred.

Audition Day
Our audition process will begin with an open cattle call to all who are interested! There is no preparation necessary for this day, as all vocal cuts will be taught in the audition room. Please do not request to sing any additionally prepared cuts.
You should wear comfortable clothing and bring water.

Casting
Everyone who attended auditions will receive a casting email whether they were cast in the production or not. This can be as soon as the day of auditions, but take up to one week. Roles will not be announced until AFTER our run of Matilda Jr this fall!

Rehearsal schedule & conflict policy

  • Please reference the rehearsal schedule here when completing your audition form.
  • All cast members will be called to every rehearsal.
  • Cast is allowed 5 scheduled conflicts during rehearsal.
  • Mandatory rehearsals are mandatory for the ENTIRE cast. Only extreme circumstances will be taken into consideration.
  • Missing rehearsals that aren't pre-established conflicts (or emergencies) may result in removal or recasting.
  • Conflicts must be submitted either on the audition form or via the additional conflicts form before rehearsals begin.
  • Please note that when listing conflicts, the answers of "none at the moment" or "none at this time" are not acceptable. If you plan on signing up for any sport or auditioning for any other show whose schedule you are unclear of, please do not audition.
  • All rehearsals will be at First Congregational Church.
Audition FAQs:
What time should I get there? Will I have to stay the whole time? You should arrive 10-15 minutes early. Auditionees will be asked to check in, and then wait outside or in the lobby until the audition starts. You will need to stay for the entire audition.

I am a parent, can I stay during auditions? Parents should feel free to stay in the building during auditions, but are not allowed in the audition room with students. All of our auditions and rehearsals are closed to the public. We understand that your student may get nervous during the audition, there is typically a 5 minute break between the vocal and dance calls where they can step out of the room and speak to you if need be.

Are there online auditions? We will not be offering an online audition option.

What should I bring? Should I prepare anything? We will learn most audition material AT the audition. You should wear comfortable clothing, closed-toed shoes, and bring water. Please do not bring headshots or resumes.

Will I have to sing / dance in front of others? Yes. Our auditions are cattle-call style, meaning the entire group will learn the dances and songs together, then do their group and solo auditions in front of one another. We encourage a supportive audition environment.

Will there be callbacks? How will I know if I got in or not?  There is a VERY low chance that any callbacks will be needed for this show. We typically do not have callbacks unless they are 100% necessary. Everyone will receive an email whether they got in or not, letting them know. The email will come within one week of the audition. If callbacks are required, we will email all those called back! Not receiving a callback does not mean that you are not being cast, it just means that a decision was already made for you.
